Westcoast Recording, located at Panther Studios, is a small and friendly audio recording and post production studio with the experience and resources to help you express the great music in your imagination. With over 30 years of playing and recording music, we have developed techniques for cutting the costs of recording and you will be surprised at what you don’t need to make a professional sounding CD.
We can help with the development and arrangement of your songs as well as all aspects of recording, mixing and producing them. We consider all types of projects, full CD's, CD EPs, demos, backing tracks or whatever you can imagine. Our studio can easily accommodate a drummer and 3-4 other musicians.
We record digitally using a Mackie SDR 24 track digital recorder and computers designed specifically for audio production. Additionally we have special hardware for hosting our over 300 digital signal processors. We have replications of some of the most important hardware in the recording industry such as: the Neve 88RS channel strip, found at Abby Road and Skywalker studios, the Fairchild 670 Compressor (around $30,000 on the vintage market), the Roland RE-201 Space Echo, used on recordings from David Bowie and Pink Floyd, and much more.

The majority of people that want to record for the first time think that everything will be easy; arrive at the studio, play your song and viola! - get your CD and you're done. If only it were that simple! Planning your project and knowing what to expect will help you get your recording done quicker and within your budget. Here are the five main steps of a successful music recording project:
Pre-Production This is the planning stage of your project where you decide your budget, dates for recording, WHY you are recording, what you will record and with whom. If you are a group, elect a spokesperson who can make decisions for the group and who will be at all phases of the recording process below.
Tracking. The two most common ways to record are, 1) "the live format" where everyone is recorded together and the vocals (re)recorded after, or, 2) to a bed track (usually rhythm guitar and vocal) which is recorded to a click track, then everyone adds their part separately. If you are well rehearsed the average tracking time for each instrument is 4 to 5 times the length of the song.
Editing. Editing is where we select the best takes and fix minor errors such as out of tune notes so that each part is ready for mixing. "Live Format" recordings are more difficult to edit than separately tracked ones.
Mixing. Mixing is the process of balancing the tracks to reflect the song's intention and is much more than just raising and lowering volumes. Volume, equalization, panning, reverb, echo and other processes such as compression/expansion and modulation effects can help the song express itself.
Mastering. This is the final step in producing a recording where in the songs are placed in order with spacing that suits the pace and feel of the recording, and, most importantly, adjusting tone and levels so that it is consistent with other great sounding records in the same genre.
The three most important things you can do to ensure that your time with us will be as productive and rewarding as possible can be summed up in two words, “BE PREPARED!” We also know that recording can be cause for exuberance and joking, but for your producer, engineer and technician, it is work and the final result of your project is directly proportional to how easy you make it for them to develop their (your) work. Here is a list of things you should consider:
